Lord Clarke of Hampstead Cleared in Police “Parliamentary Expenses” Investigation

Publication date: 5 February 2010

Neil O’May of Bindmans LLP has acted for Lord Clarke of Hampstead during the police investigation into allegations that Lord Clarke made false claims from the House of Lords under the Allowances Scheme.

Neil O’May, Partner and Head of the Criminal Law Department, says:

“Lord Clarke is hugely relieved that the nine month investigation into his claims under the House of Lords’ Allowances Scheme has ended at last, and that he has been cleared of having committed any criminal offence.

During the exhaustive enquiry, Lord Clarke provided the police with all the information they needed. He is pleased that the CPS has reached the right decision.

The Allowances Scheme that has operated in the House of Lords has been confused, uncertain and deeply flawed.  Lord Clarke welcomes the steps that are now being taken to modernise it.

Lord Clarke has been a diligent and hard working Peer. He has one of the highest attendance and voting records in the House of Lords. He is looking forward to putting this episode behind him so that he can concentrate on his job of scrutinising legislation and making good law for the country.”
