Errol Heibner - 34 Years and Counting
Publication date: 8 March 2010
Bindmans LLP welcomes the decision of the Criminal Case Review Commission to refer the murder conviction of Errol Heibner back to the Court of Appeal.
In December 1976, Mr Heibner was convicted of the contract killing of Beatrice Gold. This was a case notorious because of allegations of blackmail and police corruption.
Mr Heibner’s solicitor Rhona Friedman applied to the Commission in 2002. Mr Heibner has now been protesting his innocence for over 34 years and has had steadfast support from, amongst others, the former Chief Inspector of Prisons, Lord Ramsbotham and the Reverend Nicholas Stacey who first met
Mr Heibner when he was prison Chaplain at HMP Maidstone in the 1980s.
Rhona Friedman commented, “This is perhaps the last of the 1970s police corruption cases left unexamined by the courts and represents an extraordinarily murky episode in our criminal justice system. We hope that the Court of Appeal will shine a light on what has gone on and that finally this miscarriage of justice will be put right.”
