Basmah Sahib to speak at Mental Health Support for Asylum Seekers and Refugees Conference

Basmah Sahib, solicitor in our Public Law and Human Rights team, will be speaking at next week’s Improving Mental Health Support for Asylum Seekers and Refugees Conference. The virtual conference will take place on Friday 1 March between 10am – 5pm.

Now in its ninth year, the conference focuses on the complex issue of improving mental health support for asylum Seekers and refugees, from a variety of perspectives. Speakers at this year’s event include Dr Peter Gough (Doctors of the World UK), Gulwali Passarlay (Activist, Consultant, and Author) and Angelina Jalonen (The Refugee Council).

Basmah’s session starts at 2:15pm and is titled ‘Providing Legal Support for Asylum Seekers and Refugees who need access to mental health services’. Using her experience of working with victims of torture and age disputed asylum seeking minors suffering from PTSD, Basmah will focus on legal routes to accessing mental health support for refugees and asylum seekers. This will include transfers from immigration detention to psychiatric hospitals and the rights of detained patients in the Mental Health Tribunal .
