Spectrum Building residents meet with Margaret Mullane MP

2 mins

Spectrum Building residents took their case to Parliament on Friday in a meeting with their MP, Margaret Mullane.

In common with countless innocent victims of residential fires, Spectrum Building residents are being refused access to information about the fire that put their lives in danger and destroyed their homes and possessions.

The building freeholders and their insurers, Aviva, have the technical plans for the building and have carried out expert investigations to collect information and data about the cause and spread of the fire. They are denying residents access to that information.

Residents want answers about the fire. Bindmans acts for the residents.

Sarah Williams, Spectrum Building resident, comments:

Aviva’s behaviour is adding to the distress that we are suffering after the fire. We are asking for answers about what happened to our homes. It is more than disappointing that Aviva are keeping information secret. It makes us wonder what they have got to hide.

Margaret Mullane, MP for Dagenham and Rainham, comments:

This fire shook our community. The residents have suffered terribly and I share their profound disappointment at the behaviour of Aviva in keeping information to themselves.

Residents should be at the centre of action taken after a fire. Many other MPs and I will be doing what we can to encourage Aviva and the freeholder to do the right thing and to share their secret information with the innocent victims of the Spectrum Building fire.

In Parliament, we are looking at urgent changes to the law to stop freeholders and insurers from continuing to deny residents and innocent victims access to information about their homes.

Christian Hansen, solicitor and partner at Bindmans, comments:

It cannot be right that residents and victims of fire have to fight for information about their homes. Legislative change could and should impel freeholders and insurers to share this information without a fight.
