2 mins

We are proud to announce that our Hillsborough Team jointly won an Outstanding Achievement Award at last night’s LALY Awards 2016.

Bindmans’ Hillsborough team was recognised, along with the other Family Legal Teams, for their outstanding contribution in helping the families of Hillsborough victims obtain justice and truth about the 1989 tragedy.

Bindmans represent the family of John McBrien who was only 18 when he died in the disaster.

The team, which included Najma Rasul, Saimo Chahal, Jules Carey, Lawrence Barker, Rachel Harger and Joseph Morgan, were honoured to be recognised for their work among the following ten other organisations  who acted for the Hillsborough families:

  1. Bindmans Hillsborough team
  2. Birnberg Peirce Hillsborough team
  3. Broudie Jackson Canter Hillsborough team
  4. Doughty Street Chambers Hillsborough team
  5. EAD Solicitors Hillsborough Team
  6. Garden Court Hillsborough team
  7. Garden Court North Hillsborough team
  8. 1 Gray’s Inn Square Hillsborough team
  9. Harrison Bundey Hillsborough team
  10. Mansfield Chambers Hillsborough team
  11. 4 Paper Buildings Hillsborough team

This is the first time the LALY judges have chosen to recognise so many separate organisations in a single award category, reflecting the extraordinary nature of the case and the phenomenal work of all legal teams involved.

Jules Carey of Bindmans LLP said:

The scale of this inquest was unprecedented in terms of duration and the volume of evidence that had to be processed. But our efforts as lawyers pale into insignificance alongside the relentless determination of family members who fought so hard for 27 years to establish the truth, and one that they had known all along;  that the fans were blameless and their loved ones were unlawfully killed. It was a privilege to work with such brave campaigners, on such an important matter, and where such a significant outcome was achieved.

The LALY Awards are now into their fourteenth year and are organised by the Legal Aid Practitioners Group (LAPG) as a grassroots celebration of the work of the publicly funded sector. For more information about the awards visit the LAPG website.
