The leasehold system has been described as ‘inherently flawed and exploitative’ or, more bluntly, as ‘fleecehold’.
Steps to address the inequality between land owners, that control and manage land, and tenants, that pay all costs but have no real control, was introduced with the Leasehold and Freehold Reform Act 2024 (LFRA 2024). The Act is now under attack by some of the largest landowners in the UK.
Bindmans acts for five leaseholder groups seeking to intervene and give vital evidence about the wider public benefit of the Act and inequality it is seeking to address. Free Leaseholders & Ors have instructed Paul Ridge at Bindmans and Laura Collignon from Thomas Moore Chambers to assist in the application. The matter will be in court on Friday 23 May.
