Brexit charity launches self-help guide for EU citizens

3 mins

17 August 2018. Today, Here for Good launches the second version of ACT NOW: a free, comprehensive self-help guide for EU citizens and their families living in the UK.

Those most affected by Brexit are the same people who had no say in the referendum: EU citizens. In over two years, the Government has failed to provide certainty on their rights; in the words of the former Brexit Secretary David Davis, “nothing is agreed until everything is agreed.”

ACT NOW aims to empower EU citizens to take action by answering the key question many will have been asking since the referendum: “what do I do now?”

It has been co-authored pro-bono by two leading immigration and public law firms: Wesley Gryk and Bindmans LLP. John Halford, Bindmans LLP, Partner and Joint Head of Public Law and Human Rights team who has led this project, has recently been recognised in Legal 500’s ‘Hall of Fame’, which highlights lawyers at ‘the pinnacle of the profession’. In addition, Liz Barratt, one of ACT NOW’s authors and a supporter of Here for Good since its inception, was recently named ‘Immigration Lawyer of the Year’ by The Best Lawyers Directory.

Here for Good’s co-founders, Tahmid Chowdhury and Isabella Mosselmans, said:

Whether you voted leave or remain, it’s clear that EU citizens deserve better than they’re getting.

These are people who have made and continue to make invaluable contributions to our country. It goes way beyond the taxes they pay and the money they spend; our communities are far richer thanks to them

They deserve certainty and security from the country they call home. This guide begins to do that for them, and as a charity we will continue to strive to make sure that they can stay here for good.

Liz Barratt, Partner and Joint Head of Immigration at Bindmans LLP said:

I have been very pleased to have been involved in the writing of this Guide, which provides up to date and detailed information for EEA nationals. I hope that people find the guide helpful and that individuals will be able to support the important work of Here for Good.

ACT NOW can be accessed for free here.

To support Here for Good’s work – especially recruiting caseworkers in priority regions across the UK to provide free in-person immigration advice to the most in-need citizens – supporters can donate via their crowdfunding campaign which also launched today.

About Here for Good

Here for Good was founded in February 2018 by Tahmid Chowdhury and Isabella Mosselmans, two young law graduates determined to stand up for the rights of EU citizens.

The charity’s Board is rich with experience, from an Olivier Award-winning theatre director to a world-renowned philosopher. It also benefits from extensive in-kind support from Bindmans LLP and Wesley Gryk LLP.

Alongside the guide, Here for Good provides in-person legal advice to the most vulnerable EEA citizens through its volunteer network. It is currently crowdfunding to hire full-time caseworkers in priority regions across England and Wales; where there are high numbers of EU citizens but relatively few (if any) providers of free immigration advice.
